I'm still positive he'll be back before the 50th anniversary.
The photoshoot from last year, showing the 8th Doctor in an updated uniform and brand-spanking new WETA-produced sonic screwdriver, is too much effort and cost for a few Big Finish audio covers.
And River Song's mention of two Doctors, at the end of the last episode, seemed far more than idle banter.
David Tennant has said he'd come back for a special, ditto Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy. It's the fanboy in me, but I want to believe..

K9 was Tom Baker's era if I recall correctly
Although he might have come in during Jon Pertwee as Doctor I'm old enough to remember both. Googled it and it was The Invisible Enemy (1977) Tom Baker

I loved Pertwee, but TB was the best. Met him once at the Beeb in Southampton. Very odd chap ;-)

nice one for k9 and click too for pic
funny thing is alan partdridge said he'd bought the rights to k9 - this was sad at time, but just before dr who became popular again - he'd have made a mint if it was refeatured.

The BBC don't hold exclusive rights to the character, I know that much.
The dire Aussie show proved that.

Engineers at NASA's Ames Research Center have dubbed two intelligent mobile robots designed to explore the surface of Mars "K-9" and "Gromit".[10] NASA's K-9 is named after both Doctor Who's K-9 and Marvin the Martian's pet dog

Did think about adding him, but then thought I'd have to add Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Richard E. Grant and Joanna Lumley.
The Brit movies from the 60's are lovely, after a fashion, but the history is all wrong.
He's human, (not Time Lord), is actually called Doctor Who, and builds the shittest-looking Tardis you've ever seen in his back garden - whereas the TV movie Doctor is officially classed as being the Time Lord's 8th incarnation.
Methods for making Peter Cushing's Doctor canon to the series have been mentioned, but more as an aside than a genuine interest in doing so.

I'm laughing at the stretchy woman pelt in the back. Yay
And there's a doctor on the right I don't even recognize. But then I watched what 'merican tv allowed.
