i dunno what program you use, but photoshop has great optimising options, i find lowering the dither often gives it a nice cartoon effect aswell as saving kb.

but you have to hard-reload (ctrl-shift-R in firefox) to see the replaced image on /board; otherwise it loads the version stored in the cache.
