# lovely job :)
quick TJ: for those already annoyed about the Olympic bollocks with the torch, you probably shouldn't see this www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18151244
I thought the point of the olympic relay thing was for normal people of the UK to do it?
(, Mon 21 May 2012, 23:08, archived)
# Ugh... why did I click on that... -_-

# seeing will.i.am texting while carrying the olympic flame retty much sums it all up for me
(, Mon 21 May 2012, 23:10, archived)
# What, that the Olympics has been a complete waste of time and money, because all it does is whore out corporations that don't need the extra revenue
and have no qualms of bastardizing a traditional event that's been going for many years?

# to be fair
the whole of the modern olymics has been a gravy train for those involved, paid for by the sweat of sportsmen aiming for 'glory' and punters who've swallowed the hyperbole

it's just never been so naked before now
(, Mon 21 May 2012, 23:19, archived)
# I don't think anyone's buying into it.
I have yet to see at least one person enthusiastic about said games. Surprising, because in reality, we should be, but it's just become a hotbed of overblown, forced advertising.
In short, nobody gives a shit.

# ponder the ancient olympic games
where wars were put on hold and folk were expected to represent the badassery of their states

I wonder what those folks would make of the modern establishment.

Paté would be my best guess.
(, Mon 21 May 2012, 23:51, archived)
# I think the splendour of the ancient games could never be replicated today.
But then again, that comes with having a world dominated by multi-billion-pound corporations running the show, with people who don't even care about the games footing the bill.

# ah well, my theory of everything, thus:
99% of everything is pointless.
(, Tue 22 May 2012, 0:37, archived)
# In fact 99.99999ish% of everything here is nothing.
Oh and people don't learn much.
(, Tue 22 May 2012, 0:59, archived)
# to be fair
you're comparing with a world where the world was dominated by cholera and syphilis and where 99.999% of the population didn't see their 50th birthday, and if you failed at the games your chances of ending, within two years, fighting a pointless war against the neighbouring city in an argument about port duties were pretty high.

and beside all of that, the ancient games were actually pretty brutal and ugly, and if we had them now we wouldn't want to watch. we've got a certain respect for a lack of human suffering that the ancient greeks just couldn't give a fuck about
(, Tue 22 May 2012, 1:29, archived)
# what i guess i'm trying to say is that "splendour" is romanticised nonsense
they were "splendid" in the way that fox hunting, bull-fighting and bear-baiting are splendid, or if we had an ultimate fighting league that was to the bloodied-pulp-of-death
(, Tue 22 May 2012, 1:31, archived)
# I'm just too anti-consumerist for my own good.
I guess what I was taught about the ancient Olympics was horse-shit; I really should do a bit of research beforehand, if I'm discussing things out of my own field. XD
