the big problem was the visual tone of the whole thing...it was too bright... it made it look tacky and plastic...

Indeed.The whole nuclear armageddon "Apocalypse War" storyline of would have been awesome for a trilogy... Block Mania, Apocalypse War, and then something non-canon with the Dark Judges - sort of a post-apocalyptic Necropolis.
