Have it proper noir and him narrate everything that's going on.
Only instead of being a detective he's the detective's assistant, and he's constantly dispairing of how rubbish his boss is and always solves the case in an instant, but it too apathetic to tell anyone.

I'm currently writing a short story based on the random anecdotes I write in my sketchbook
not too far from that. The main protagonist gets locked out of his flat after an argument with his flatmate, and blah blah blah something about scientists in an underground bunker and zombies and stuff.
I wrote the first draft hungover.
