or try saving
as both a jpg and a gif and see which is smaller
pics with large areas all the same colour may be smaller as a gif (And will avoid the nasty compression artefacts that jpgs can produce)

I think
paint will let you choose JPEG as the format, and stick any old crap in as the file name :-)

so it could have been myimage.mp3 :-)
