# postal order?
if you put two vertical lines through a postal order, it acts like a cheque and can only be put into a bank account
(, Sun 21 Sep 2003, 15:40, archived)
# what exactly is a postal order?
in all my years, i've never heard of anyone using one.
(, Sun 21 Sep 2003, 15:42, archived)
# oh, you need a machine to officially do that...
don't you?
(, Sun 21 Sep 2003, 15:43, archived)
# like a cheque
you pay e.g. £5 at the post office and get a £5 pound postal order that can be cashed at other post offices, just a safer way of sending money through the post.

# i got given a chequebook when i was an unemployed sixteen year old with only
fifty pence in that account. they can't be that hard to get.
(, Sun 21 Sep 2003, 15:48, archived)
# the banks give 16 year olds all sorts
they used to offer actual cash and lots of record vouchers/gift certificates and stuff.
All on the basis that once you've got an accoutn with them you'll stay with them and give them all your money.

Once you're 20 and unemployed and in debt they'll tell you to sod off.

# but not

(, Sun 21 Sep 2003, 15:48, archived)

# I think...
...it depends on the amount of the postal order.

The post office will be able to tell you.
(, Sun 21 Sep 2003, 15:51, archived)
# go to a post office and ask
"can I have a postal order for £x.xx" and they'll charge you £x.xx plus a bit more for it, you write who it's going to on the order(s) and your name+address on the back, tear off the stub(s) and keep it, then post the order(s) to them
for added safety send it via recorded or special delivery (if it's for more than £28) and put two vertical lines through it so the recipiant can only put it into their bank account, rather than turning it directly into cash on the spot at a post office
