two reasons
1) A lot of message boards won't allow non-standard file types, so it helps prevent leeching
b) It boosts my ego

you just make a layer to go over the others
where each line aleternates between black and transparent. Effectively makes the image half the size.

I don't think there's a word for it,
someone would be a ninja, or a martial-artist. I'm pretty sure a ninja is not bound to any one style of art.
