# Spazz complete - here is the original post of the Argie Footballers
on www.b3ta.com/board/archive/1386/
'Made by DePahnne @kotnet.absurd'

Everyone go here and tell the BBC about it news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/services/feedback/html/errors_form.stm

# I sent them
the argentinian wall with handbags was NOT designed by the Mirror at all news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/programmes/what_the_papers_say/html/default.stm It was stolen from the internet, it appeared on www.b3ta.com about a week before - before Argentina were knocked out. And before b3ta it appeared on a private bulletin board I refer you to this post - dated well before the Mirror used it www.b3ta.com/board/1/3/4/6/5/8 de phanne is a user on that bulletin board - kotnet.absurd
This appears to be the main site for them freggle.cc.kuleuven.ac.be/absurd/ you should if you can find someone that speaks the language be able to find and contact de phanne and rectify this error and it was such a wonderful picture i think he should be entered into the award himself. Or at least paid money by the Mirror who doubtless made millions by stealing his work.

# i bet he curses
not using a watermark...
(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 13:29, archived)
# he did indeed
but they'd have cropped/edited it out anyway.
Hopefully this will get sorted out and maybe they'll eject the pic from the competition or actually give the guy proper credit and let him win - i'm sure the Sun would love to know that the mirror have been stealing pics and passing them off as their own (which they would never do ;)
(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 13:33, archived)
# I just tried to speak with the journalist, but he's left the Guardian apparently
I'll try Granada again a bit later, other than that, perhaps someone could point one of the other papers in the direction of the chance to rip the piss out of one of their rivals...

# email em
[email protected] and try Matthew Norman. They're into this sort of thing at the mo after tvcream was ripped off

# the sun arent interested.
I just phoned them, and they say they refuse to acknowledge that the mirror exists.

I kid you not.
(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 14:04, archived)
# that'll be because
the people who work at the sun are all ugly, I imagine. :OP

That's reminded me of the 'looking directly at the sun may cause blindness' post from about a week ago!

# Ver Mirror
would've shopped it out anyway.
I remeber Jo Whiley on Radio One supposedly inteviewing the guy who made it after tracking him down via messageboards. He wouldn't speak on air for some reason.

# I've just sent
them a complaint as well. Hopefully they'll take notice if they receive a barage of objections/corrections.

The "Argentinian Footballers with Handbags" picture shortlisted in the What the Papers Say award was not created by or paid for by The Mirror. Taking a joke from the internet which landed in your inbox and sticking it on your front page whilst pretending ownership is lazy, arrogant and not good journalism. Surely not the sort of values that What the Papers Say should be espousing?

# here you go
it would do a great service to a great many people, if your programme "what the papers say" could inform the viewing public that the photograph of the argentinean footballers was stolen by the mirror [please see a far earlier usage www.b3ta.com/board/1/3/4/6/5/8 - which has the decency to credit the *original* creator who posted the picture on a bulletin board (kotnet.absurd). rather than giving the mirror undue credit, it would do far better, and a far better story, if the award was sent to the real genius.

(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 13:38, archived)
# My attempt at starting an e-mail campaign is here, feel free to post it to people who keep e-mailing you that kind of thing.
(also you might want to tidy it up a bit)

Please pass along:

This was brought to my attention:
news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/programmes/what_the_papers_say/html/de
fault.stm

WRONG it was not designed by the mirror.

Please go to the factual errors feedback form
news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/services/feedback/html/errors_form.stm
and let them know that the image was just lifted wholesale from the internet
by the mirror and is NOT theirs to copyright.

www.b3ta.com/board/1/3/4/6/5/8 is where it was posted on a
messageboard by a friend of it's creator many days before the mirror
published it. The creator was credited as 'De Phanne' at a private bulletin
board kotnet.absurd freggle.cc.kuleuven.ac.be/absurd/ where the
friend was also a member.

If everyone that got sent that image by e-mail (many before the Mirror
published the picture on the front page) could let the BBC know of the facts
then hopefully the creator can finally get some credit for what they did and
THE MIRROR won't walk away with the prize for doing nothing more than right
clicking and using 'save as'.

(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 13:58, archived)
# am I
the only one who thinks this is all overreacting a bit?

*hides*

# Just hope
the original originator doesn't get twatted by whoever took the original picture that he stole to make that pic...
(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 14:24, archived)
# that is a point we tend to forget on here
nicking and doctoring someone else's picture does not mean you own the legal copywright. The mirror have not done much more than the handgag creator did, if the original picture is by a professional sports journalist he could be in trouble.
(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 14:29, archived)
# but the Mirror used the image to make money
b3ta is just for wholesome non-profit fun, if an original copyright owner objected to the use of one of their images I doubt there is anyone on this board who would not take the image down ASAP.
(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 14:55, archived)
# I also sent them this
Your report on "What the Papers Say" for the 23 November (news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/programmes/what_the_papers_say/html/default.stm) states that the so-called Argentinian Handbags photograph was created by the Daily Mirror. This is in fact incorrect, as the Mirror plagarised this picture from the B3ta messageboard, the original post of which can be found here (www.b3ta.com/board/archive/1386/).

The person who actually created the image was credited on the page as De Phanne @kotnet.absurd.

The Daily Mirror have copyrighted a picture that they did not originally create and the BBC is complicit in this image theft by reproducing the image without researching its origins.
(, Fri 22 Nov 2002, 13:55, archived)
# Lets get something straight...
The Mirror has not copyrighted anybody's image. They ripped off the Argentinian picture from the internet and have not claimed copyright for themselves. The fact that the BBC website claims that copyright is owned by The Mirror does not mean that the Mirror claims this.

Anyway, the images creator was ripping off the copyright of the person who took the picture... and almost every single picture posted on b3ta evah is ripping off somebody elses copyright.

So before you all go off insisting on your legal rights, bear in mind that without the law turning a blind eye to your activities this website would not exist.

# Told Them Straight
I like getting to be a twat in the name of justice.

WEBSITE designer Carl Baldwin, who created the Argentinian team with handbags picture, is to produce a jokey guide to the World Cup exclusively for our readers.

The computer-enhanced image, which we splashed on our front page yesterday, became a sensation after being emailed all over the world.

But Carl, 38, who created the fun picture for work colleagues, was amazed when it appeared in the Mirror.

He said: "I was gobsmacked. All my colleagues have been buying copies and piling them on my desk. It's incredible."

Now Carl and workmates at Rufus Leonard Design are to create more amusing images with computer wizardry.

Carl, from Whitechapel, East London, said: "A friend had emailed me the photos of the Argentinian team lined up and they looked so girlie and cringey, I thought I'd give them a few handbags.

"It was before the game so obviously I had no idea how it would turn out. After the party, I emailed it to a few people and suddenly everything went mad. People as far afield as Sydney and Hong Kong have seen it."
