GIF is better for simple blocky-coloured pictures,
JPEG being better for colourful photographs.
If your software can't save as JPEG/GIF nicely (such as MSPAINT) then try www.xnview.com/ - it can convert a number of formats. Save as BMP as usual, open in XnView, then "save as" and set to JPEG/GIF.
