...because tarring all the compo entries with the same Anti-American brush isn't at all like us calling all Americans gun-crazed ignorant warmongering xenophobes at all.
Here's my compo entry, ok it might be banal, it probably isn't very funny, but where's the anti-Americanism?

I'm seriously getting annoyed with people being twats, on both sides of this argument. There's an ignore button for a reason, someone's opinion offends you, click that button. Or respond reasonably.
Rant over, sorry folks.

I'm just in a ranty mood at the moment, especially about unfluffey people being mean to one another. No need for it!

etc.
I agree with your comment. I got called an anti-american for posting a picture of Cristopher Walken as president.
I just think the guy has a fantastic voice. [And is a great actor]
I keep hearing My fellow Americans in his gravelly voice in my head...
He would be cool as President.
[I was dissapointed by the fact his race is a hoax :-(]
It had absolutely nothing to do with my anti-americanism.

Two completely unrelated ideas, huh?
I think he would be a great president for a month. Perhaps the next administration can institute guest presidencies or something.

someone proposed me for president earlier today; you don't think I'm going to get beaten up once the night shift starts to arrive, do you?

I get told I'm a racist because I post a picture that includes a burning US flag. Never mind that this is an action is one performed by Americans themselves or that this is an act that even patriots will defend and fuck the fact I've got relatives from Kentucky and Manhatan and that my current romantic interest comes from Utah, I'm a racist because I posted that picture without even stating an opinion or anything about Americans themselves.

entry is lovely actually.
What's unreasonable about my response? I thought, rather than responding to each individual entry which I found not even related to the compo (which, for the most part, has managed to turn into a free for all bash) that I would put something up everyone would see at once.
I'm sorry I'm annoying, I just felt like I needed to do something larger than posting "hey! america is ok sometimes!" to most of the entries in the compo itself.

Ban democracy and give the challenge dictator full powers. That's my motto.

reacting is wrong, so I'll just go back into my lurk closet now.

At least you odn't use big phrases that wrap awkwardly in the front page competition box, like
"international image" "corporate rebranding". Too big. Looks crap!

there's a legitimate argument that all patriotism is a post-tribal form of racism.
American or otherwise.
i suspect many people here have no problem with Americans, bar their lack of awareness of foreign policy - 31 democratic nation states toppled in 30 years, anyone? Americans are lovely people, but the majority must fail to see how they are electing leaders who put business about their own people, and the economic interests of their own people above the lives of foreigners?
It's a problem that's endemic to the west (British posters here will probably realise that the US took it's lead from the behaviour of Britain throughout the early 20th C), but these days the US is seen as both thte worst offender, and the one with the big stick as it were, keeping the more flexible nations in line.

the criminally-underused form of government.
(unless you count the US, of course)

I favour no nation over any other and feel that other than those who follow the stereotypes layed out for them there is no defining behaviour, ideal, name based on what piece of rock they just happened to have been ejaculated out on to. Do you want a medal for being from whateverland?

"..who put business about their own people, and the economic interests of their own people above the lives of foreigners"
That is a very articulate way to put it (the entire post), and I agree with you. I am totally frustrated wholly with how things are in the country.
Now that, coupled with the compo entries that makes it seem like everyone hates us, it just makes me angry all over the place. Sorry about being unfluffy, everyone.

while there are problems in the US (poverty, criminal system, uber-capitalism), there are problems pretty much everywhere. You're a big country with more clout than any country bar quiet scary old China (to whom you owe a farcical amount of money and even Bush backed down from). Cosequently, you draw more flak than the smaller nation states. If Europe does eventually go Federal, it will probably see similar abuse!
The main thing, in my experience, is that most americans are decent well meaning people who either fail to see or are mislead on what their leaders do - and with a big big country it's not entirely your fault for being inward looking - there's so much going on at home it's hard to look next door.
Forgive my awkward phrasing - i tend to still use very critical terms, but again this reflects my views on your government (mix of logic and by this point prejudice) but NOT on americans. i lived in NH for 6 months and had a ball. Blew up a car enging, sunk two canoes, had guns pointed at me - it was a blast!

:(
And it's not specifically your piccy, sorry if I gave that impression. It's the whole atmosphere on the board at the minute. Between the anti-American thing, and the racism thing, and the homophobic thing, I'm just sad that people can't have a place where none of that is an issue :(

Best saying anyone ever taught me as far as this goes is that if you turn the TV off the world becomes a much nicer place.
