There was a mistranlastion in a fax from Japan to America
It should have been "Monkey Kong" but came out "Donkey Kong"
And by the time they'd realised, they'd already printed all the stuff. Or something. So kept it.

that's like that Bond Film "Tomorrow Never Dies"
was a typo, meant to be "Tomorrow Never Lies", same reasons etc.

Funny old thing language
Mitsubishi named their cars after horses (like the Palomino) till they made the Starion. It was supposedly at the launch party for the car when they did the big reveal of the car and its name, when someone said "there is no R in Starion"

He was named Donkey Kong
because Shigeru Miyamoto was looking for a Western word for "stupid" - Kong referring to the monkey factor. Another theory is that "Donkey" was simply a mishearing of "Monkey" over a bad phone connection.
