depression has plenty to do with ego

that is a sweeping false generalization of the illness

Oh, who cares?
It's only internets.
You can't start pooing and arguing about every stereotype or generalization, because then we'd be left with nothing but fart gags and ducks.
If you don't like something, either swear at them or ignore it.
(

I agree with this.

There are certain things
that are sometimes joked about on here that I don't like, and make me feel awful.
But I don't start moaning, because it's no worse than jokes about rape or mongs, it's just something that happens to be personal to me.
(
Comma, Fri 1 Sep 2006, 21:35,

I wasn't arguing about a stereotype or generalisation
I was pointing out an inaccuracy in the statement, which is that depression is not necessarily related to ego.

I have to say having been through a really severe depression myself that I think the majority of the time it is.
(
Guineapiggy Fuzzeh!, Fri 1 Sep 2006, 22:29,

I've heard the other arguments.
I just think people are afraid to say it could have anything to do with a person's personality because they would have to say there's something immoral about having depression, which wouldn't be very helpful.
And that's all I'm going to say on the subject.
(
hanke, Fri 1 Sep 2006, 21:30,

not at all, the root cause of the depression is sometimes (as in my case) linked to something externally
it doesn't always get triggered by feeling all emo, although in some cases, people do thrive on the attention of feeling depressed, I grant you.
in my case, getting mugged three times, the last time being lucky to be alive after being knifed, and having to drop out of Uni because of it kinda played a big part in the whole depression leading to breakdown thing...
but with the right help, and patience, I built back up, and I know I'm not alone in having been 'externally' affected, leading to depression...
It's a tough area to deal with, I take your point entirely, but its a wider subject than that, by a long shot
(
The Great Architect, Fri 1 Sep 2006, 21:32,

Apart from teh usual childhood / adolescent shit we all go through
I had no external influences to speak of when I had my 'episode'. I still get them every so often, even with a healthy dose of legal narcotics.
Apparently - in my case at least - it's due to a chemical imbalance in the brain.
That, and I'm just a miserable snappy bitch, obviously...

ha ha ha ha, obviously *he said, before scarpering* ;-)
But that just goes to show that there are both depression caused by internal and external factors...
