It's not just a blanket blur for the top and bottom of the image - it's for things in the foreground and background. The yellow sticky up bits are part of the thing you're "focusing" on, but you've blurred them anyway just because they stick up towards the top of the photo. This is wrong.
Try looking at some really close-up photos on flickr (with very shallow depth-of-field) and you'll get the idea.

but you need to think more about the physical z-planes you are trying to blur. It's not just a matter of gradiating the blur from top to bottom (unless you are producing a tilt-shift of a flat plane!)
For example, the top of the middle pointy-bit is blurring to the same level as the far edge of the dome. This isn't right, as the top of this particular pointy bit is pretty much the same distance away from the lens as the rest of it. So some z-channel work for the fake lens blur has to be intruduced to make it properly convincing.
