Pagan fertility
The hare - a noble beast - was a symbol of spring (hares boxing, etc). Over time he got reduced to a bunny.
Chocolate eggz came from somewhere Scandiwegian, prolly, but the eggs obviousy are another fertility symbol/sign of spring.
