Purely because it's all I've ever used, apart from a few macs when I was doing my publishing thing. Blech, they're weird.
For all those mac fans 'oh but you can't do graphics without them' people- manwife's a graphic designer and he fucking hates them.

i don't do gaming or any of that sort of stuff, i just hack up the odd image and download crap so it does the job.

boots up to a Live CD version of Ubuntu.
So you can try it out without installing it on your PC.
It also means that you can muck around with applications or play some of the games whilst you're installing it.
The install process is just as easy as installing Windows. In fact, it's probably easier and it's certainly a lot quicker, even though you get more stuff installed.
It's good at detecting and setting up all your hardware too. I would recommend giving it a shot on a spare hard drive at least.
If you have windows installed already, it'll detect that too (and migrate over account names and passwords), and give you an option to boot into either when you start your PC.
