and many of them show even the great R:type up as the out of date classic it is

I never got why R-Type was so special. Seemed like your average side scrolling space shooter to me.

it was an M&S side scrolling shoot-em up
cool design
well balanced scoring system
and fiendishly difficult :)
oh, and it was the daddy that every other side scroller tried to copy afterwards

although losing all power-ups after a death was always annoying
but i spose the answer to that was, don't die! :)
