'alternative universe'.
The definition of alternate, to my mind, doesn't properly describe what people meant when they say 'alternate universe'.
It seems to be an Americanism to say alternate when you in fact mean alternative.
Thank you.

but not quite. Those two words represent the same concept. Alternate and alternative represent different concepts.

it was probably a phrase coined by an american sci-fi author that stuck

Probably one of those awful ones like Ron Hubbard.
I just wince whenever I hear it. It grates. :/
edit: actually, thinking of it, it's not just the idiomatic phrase 'alternate universe'. I recall hearing our trans-Atlantic cousins use 'alternate' to mean 'alternative' in general usage quite a bit. :(
For example: "Why shucks, here's a mighty fine rifle for hunting them Latinos. And hey, if that ain't doin' the job there's an alternate model here that'll blow the head off a Frenchie from a mile away. Hot damn!"

usually it's prioritize this and departmentalize that.

but I think 'alternate' is about as complicated a word as they can manage. ;)
*expounds racist anti-America views on public internet forum, thereby attracting the attention of the CIA and probably FBI too - they seem to think they police the world anyway*

not quite the same, but "the plane will be taking off momentarily" doesn't quite mean the same as "will be taking off in a moment"
