Although we did do some interesting critical theory gubbins on The Shining during my film studies MA, so I guess this has probably heightened my appreciation somewhat.

for e.g., It's nice how subtly Kubrick builds a sense of foreboding into it by shooting so many scenes from a relatively low angle - it both shrinks you and limits your field of vision, making you feel vulnerable as a viewer without really noticing why. (The over-the-shoulder tracking shots of the kid on the trike are a good example.)
