it's the physical size itself that made it so hard to optimize
if you'd made it, say, 300 or 400kb in width, it would have preserved some of the quality (though rob wouldn't have liked it as much) ;-)

i didnt want to crop it any more to be ohnest
the original images were 1024*768 so i chopped it down to 640*480 (that removed 7mb from the master copy)
