Perhaps it's not Vista-compliant or something but it always crashes on me and generally is a bit of a cunt.

If you're on a Mac then definitely use HandBrake handbrake.fr/ There is a Windows version but I've never had much joy with it. The Mac version's an absolute dream of a conversion program, though.

Stoik Video Converter is rather good (and free), though in my experience their earlier version is better and more stable. I have the install file for that version -- message me if you're interested).

Failing that, River Past Video Cleaner Pro is excellent, but not free.

For a notable physicist who's worked with some big names and is frankly well-respected in his own right he's got some pretty fucked-up ideas. I thought Penrose was barmy for arguing that quantum gravity is the root of consciousness but Tipler's got him beat.
