My dad gets his for free as he is an Italian and they renew them for free at the consulate.
I could similarly get an Italian passport but I'm not legally registered in Italy or they don't like dual nationality or something, I've never really cared that much to look into it.

and that's what they claim you're paying for.

is fucking expensive though, was pissed off when i got my first adult one as i'd been told that i'd get a free 5-year extension to my child one, but when i came to renew was told that as it was issued after a certain date they'd changed their rules and not told anyone

I don't think mine needs renewing for another 6 years, and to be honest I was planning to emmigrate at some point (although it will clearly never happen)
and then I might be able to get free renewals on a British passport as an expat, I honestly don't know.

Plus to prove my existence to the Italian government I need to send them a birth certificate, an actual one not a photocopy, which cost about 70 quid or something.
