At work, we had
a load of sound gear on hire to the Aussie army and they took it to Iraq. When they were driving, they managed to drop one of the pelican cases and some US troops came along, thought it was a bomb and took two attempts to blow it up. It was full of microphones.

how do night vision cameras work?
(

Infrared bulbs would just be heat sources, they wouldn't help.
You'd need an infrared camera. Or lots of carrots.

when i point my remote control at my cameraphone...
i can see the light... would that work? (its also how i test to see if my remote batteries are dead (i don't use the remotes so none of them have batteries in now as i can reach my hifi stand from here!)
(
SkUG HAS BOUGHT A HOUSE - WOO YEAH!, Sat 6 Sep 2008, 23:40,

I'd guess that that's the remote control emitting some light, rather than the camera picking up infrared.

i thought remotes where IR? (infa red)
(
SkUG HAS BOUGHT A HOUSE - WOO YEAH!, Sat 6 Sep 2008, 23:51,

I think so.
But if your camera can see it, maybe it's not purely IR it's emitting

are you wearing the "special" pyjammas?
(
SkUG HAS BOUGHT A HOUSE - WOO YEAH!, Sun 7 Sep 2008, 0:07,

No, I'm using a regular phone camera which wont pick up Infra Red light, as I assume is the same for most cameras.
(

does your camera do video?
bit strange...
(

My samsung camera phone sees the remote light as a kind of purplish light.
But if I put the remote up near my eye and block out the ambient light with my hand, I see nothing.
(

Yeah.
I guess the camera must have some IR sensitivity.
I don't think it'd work for night vision though.

should i buy an IR torch to find out?
(or make one myself)?
(

I vote: use microwaves instead of IR radiation.

wow if i open the door on my microwave and take a picture
i can see the inside of my microwave! amazing!
(
SkUG HAS BOUGHT A HOUSE - WOO YEAH!, Sun 7 Sep 2008, 0:19,

HURRR. That's because the microwave isn't on.
Even if it was, you'd see nothing.

Go for it.
Or take some pictures of hot things that aren't glowing, like an electric hob.

(
SkUG HAS BOUGHT A HOUSE - WOO YEAH!, Sun 7 Sep 2008, 0:19,

If it's really picking up IR,
in theory it should see the difference between a cold hob and a hot hob.
Probably won't, but worth a shot.

My cameras do.
Grill elements, anyway, as we have gas hobs here.
There's many a tutorial on the web about rejigging digital cameras to properly pick up IR. They can be a bit complicated though.
It usually involves replacing the IR filter with a piece of exposed film (blocks out visible light but not IR).

I can't.
Why not?
Because the King of the Potato People won't let me. I begged him. I got down on my knees and wept. He wants to keep you here. Keep you here for ten years.
