McCain's in the Oval Office! RED ALERT!
Edit: pardon me, I forgot this: Woo!

SO many people here are tired of Republican politics that there's really not much else of a choice. I'm just worried that the boys in sheets in the south won't off the man before he even takes the oath of office.
I'm absolutely amazed at the amount of bigotry that still exists here.

all of whom say that racism is still very much rife down there...

I just get a bit tired of generalisations, whichever direction they're aimed in.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 21:53, archived)
But the inclination that it's ONLY in the south is wrong. It's EVERYWHERE! It's just more widely accepted in the south.

it genuinely terrifies me the supposedly educated and privelaged people down there who seem to genuinely think Obama is the anti-christ, or Saddam Hussein with a mask on.

well-informed and erudite people who thoughtfully articulate their point of view? No, it's much more fun to pick a selection of barely-literate reactionaries and poke them with a stick until they start shouting.

That somewhere in this enormous country there isn't a group with the forethought to plan an assassination if the *insert derogatory slang here* gets elected?
I'm apologetic if I am generalizing, but this IS something I have witnessed first hand.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 21:50, archived)
I'm not arguing that there is still a lot of racism. Lumping entire populations into the same category strikes me as a counter-productive reaction to it though.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 21:56, archived)
And as for the generalization I apologize.
I suppose though it was the two sixteen year old kids who kept muttering the slur "nigger"
under their breath to a nice woman and her daughter while waiting in line for the movies
in Texas that had me thrown. All the while the teens kept laughing and the lady did nothing.
Or perhaps it was the kindly sheriff in Oklahoma whom I saw trip a young black man as he
was running, watched him fall, then took out his gun and shouted "Where you goin' in such a hurry, boy?"
Or the fact that in nearly every major city south of the Mason Dixon it's whites out at night, blacks in the evening?
But I egress ;)
Really you are correct. Generalizations are not good things. I'm just worried that we as a country might do something as grown up as electing someone based on their beliefs and politics rather than their color and morality and someone will do something stupid that shows the REST of the world just how moronic we really are...
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 22:07, archived)
It's just worrying that anyone who is meant to be educated and capable of weighing up the situation in terms of which candidate would bring about the best development for their country, turn it around from the economic issues, giv it a better image to the rest of the world, etc, would only vote for McCain because he's anti-abortion or not a slight (and highly unlikely) threat to their personal firearm collection.

It's so much better to get quotes from people saying "I would not vote for Obama ... he scares me" (!!) than people saying "I disagree with his policies, or some such boring, non-stereotype.

so no, it really really couldn't :P
-edit- my mistake, it's happened a few times since the war, '48, '60, '64, '68 and the last time was '76, but since then it's been one of the most solidly Republican states.
I don't think there's a chance in hell of it happening these days.

Rather ironic that they coloured his state's brown, though! Maybe Rednecks secretly love brown cock?
On a serious note, it would also be interesting to see if any of the states that voted for a segregationist 40 years ago would now vote for a black president.
