absolutely they did!
apparently up to the 3rd century it was a mark of honour to do it "warts n all", showing respect for a life well lived, etc. Then it got all showy and classical and ... yawn. pah. Bloody Constantine.
And how do you get someone to sit still for something of that precision? the preliminary sketches must have been something else...
