Apparently, A Fistful fo Dollars is basically a scene by scene reshoot of this Akira Kurosawa flick.

Almost forgot... here's the writeup that led me to this film.
I was well aware of Kurosawa but honestly never heard of this film. I've only just started watching it, got sucked right into the story and already recognize the scenes that... ermmm... "inspired" Sergio Leone.

Yeah, but they gave it a much better title in the remake.

One of my favourite Samurai movies
Though some would argue whether it's really a Samurai movie...

I guess it could be argued that all new works are based on previous efforts.
Thanks for posting the other suggestions. It's made for some nice weekend watching.

You should also check out Seven Samurai - the film is mirrored in The Magnificent Seven. Interestingly Kurosawa was highly influenced by John Ford and Westerns of the 1940s.
You have a Japanese director, influenced by US Westerns, who then inspires Italian directors (spaghetti Westerns), who then relaunch and reinvigorate the Western.
