This is a link post Russell Brand replies to the open letter.
Now I'm generally not a fan of this bloke, but his letter back to the "cold paella" bloke is rather good. Worth a read.

This is a normal post That surprised me
That was well-written indeed. Didn't feel as pretentious as a lot of his stuff.

This is a normal post I too find myself warming to Russell Brand over all of this
Just illustrates how contemptuous City workers are. What's the betting he's a contractor? Probably pays fuck all tax.

This is a normal post That's the best stuff he's ever written.
If he keeps going like that I may start to have some respect for him (as long as he drops that pseudo-babble he comes out with).

This is a normal post He's not pushing book sales of that book in any way is he
He still fails to grasp turning up without an appointment never really works, especially as the workingmen he wanted to confront, who he said says he’d never knowingly keep from their dinner, were probably extremely busy people and probably above engaging with a moron, promoting their latest book

This is a normal post If it's for a film, as he says,
they probably want to show how inaccessible the bosses are - so having the door slammed in your face is one way to do that.

This is a normal post but, even if they did agree an interview, this is a man who lives in his own world...
dismissing graphs as tools the establishment use to bamboozle the proletariat.

I honestly think if they sat him in front of someone who totally knows their onions, and doesn't allow him to move the goal posts around, he'd shit his pants.

This is a normal post For example... the blog article states that the sale of RBS will probably recoup the bailout AND make a profit...
now, I'm not just going to take that as gospel because I read it on a blog, but if it's true then a lot of the argument falls on its arse.

This is a normal post My fear would be that there is no one there
who does know what they are on about (or, at least, would be honest about it).

Sadly, a documentary on economics presented by a professor would be unlikely to get the punters in.

I imagine Michael Winterbottom will not shy away from showing Brand's own foibles (of which there a many - the graphs thing being a good example), as his films are rarely flattering.

This is a normal post "Remember in the riots when disaffected youth nicked the odd bottle of water or a stray pair of trainers? "
Not quite how I remembered it - I remember innocent people fleeing their burning homes, people being assaulted in the street by gangs of looters and thugs, a guy being knocked off his moped and beaten while someone else rode off on it, posing in photos of their swiped goodies while family businesses were razed to the ground, a young kid being robbed while he bled...

They weren't disaffected or poor, they were opportunist thieves and thugs who saw their chance to cause chaos and went for it. So fucking what if some of them got a hefty slap for their crimes?
(, Thu 18 Dec 2014, 12:40, , Reply)
This is a normal post Brand does rather make a light point of the riots, in which people died.
But the point about the looters/bankers is a good one to make, I think. I'm no fan of his constant ranting, but it does appear to be bringing the stories to the front pages. And he appears to be doing it out of altruism and not to flog his book.

This is a normal post He's like Michael Moore when he was popular.
I know it's just pop culture, but ranting about the ills of the world shouldn't become a virtue to be celebrated in it's own right. Yeah it's cathartic - we all do it. But let's not accept it as a substitute for thinking about things seriously.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2014, 13:49, , Reply)
This is a normal post No. No he isn't.
Because Michael Moore wasn't anywhere near as an annoying, self-promoting prick. Plus Michael Moore actually did proper research, and had valid arguments without resorting to words that he didn't fully understand the meaning of himself, in order to wrong-foot people.

This is a normal post I just think he picked a bad example
by saying "the odd bottle of water and stray pair of trainers" he's willfully glossing over situation that was far, far worse. As Fray said up there, people died in those riots, homes were destroyed and a lot of innocent people suffered. Whether you agree with his politics or not, it's just wrong of him to write that.

If someone said that the Hillsborough disaster was "just a bit of argy bargy" then they'd be ripped to shreds.

This is a normal post Ah right,
I agree with that.
(, Thu 18 Dec 2014, 14:22, , Reply)
This is a normal post Except he HAS said that.
He flat out stated at the time that it "Would be wrong to stifle their (the looters') individuality, and their creative approach to venting their frustrations by jailing them."
That was Brand, about a week after the riots.

Russell Brand is a complete cunt. And if I were in charge he'd have been sent to the camps years ago. Oh, and in case you've all forgotten, what with him being the populist voice of hipster cunts everywhere these days, HE USED TO PICK UP HIS PAYCHECK FROM RUPERT FUCKING MURDOCH!
(, Thu 18 Dec 2014, 14:02, , Reply)
This is a normal post the main sticking point for me, on this whole thing, is the fact he sells his book through amazon...
... then bitches about companies - like amazon - dodging taxes.

Why not make the point of having the book ONLY sold in independent bookstores?! That alone would have been picked up by the press, giving him a fuck load of publicity.

I personally agree with the sentiment of (a sizeable amount of) his rhetoric... but I think the way he goes about it goes nowhere to change the minds of those who think he's a self-serving egotistical fuckstick.

This is a normal post I don't object to him personally
But he doesn't have a leg to stand on until he gets his own affairs in order and lives by his own rules. For people like him it's always someone else's responsibility and there's always some reason why their hypocrisy is acceptable.

"My millions aren't part of the problem, I don't count because of x / my comparitively priviliged existence is acceptable because of x"

That's fine, I'm not saying you should give it up. You are.

This is a normal post Why do so many people on here hysterically hate Russell Brand so much?
Yes he's irritating and pretentious and a hypocrite but in a week where over a hundred children have been murdered in a school he's not done anything actually that awful.

and as for the "lock 'em all up" attitude regarding the riots:

https://domesticempire.wordpress.com/2011/08/16/broken-britain-riots/

if the rioters deserve a hefty slap for their crimes what do the other pair deserve?
