A school friend used the army to get out of the reach an extremely violent dad. This was during Thatcher Britain, so the plod did not give a shit about a shit getting smashed.

Army was hard, especially for a skinny shy read head with scars...

But he did well, ended up at the Royal Corp of Enginners and got a good education and now has a normal life.

They're not allowed near a war zone until they are 18 so what's wrong with employing them and training them for up to two years prior? I'll agree that the army probably isn't the best place for someone so young but recruitment is voluntary and many youngsters thrive.
