This is a link post Ford Galaxie 500 first engine start up. One for the petrolheads... I made this!
So about a month ago a friends granddad tells him of this old car he has in his barn. Went round for a look and there's a 1964 Ford galaxie 500. It's been parked in there since 1975 when it failed it's M.O.T. So I bought it and me and dad have being slowly trying to sort it out. Today we finally got brave enough to try starting it.....

This is a normal post Yeah, it is huge. Will be fun to drive on UK roads.
Nice to find one in decent condition and with right hand drive though. I just hope we can get it back on the road again.

This is a normal post Timing and maybe a stuck valve.
I've got a '55 Chevy that sat. The exhaust valves don't like that. Whatever gave people the notion to build cars the size of yachts. I'm just saving my Chevy for a coffin. I'm burying myself in it.

This is a normal post ooo0ooo what kinda chevy is it???
Agreed, there is something fun about the sheer hugeness of the old yank tanks. It's not what I was looking for but too good to miss when it was on the doorstep.

It got a bit better after a couple of runs. I'm amazed how good things have been considering how long it stood.
Have been trying to lube it up over a couple weeks and turning it over by hand.

This is a normal post Pickup.
Big window model. I stuck a 69 Camero 327 in it, because it was free, and the old straight six was dead. It just sits, taking up garage space now. But I really do love that old thing. It's amazing what you can mix and match on those American vehicles. The old '55 four speed tranny bolted on to the newer Camero engine.

This is a normal post nice :)
The v8's although slightly more complex than the straight sixes I've always found to be more fun and easier to get bits for. A lot of vehicles shared parts back then. Plus things were really built to last. A lot of the stuff on this car is 50 years old but works fine. Stuck a battery on and all headlights, brakelights, indicators etc work. bonkers.

His starting problem is it doesn't have a 6.4 V8 in it.

This is a normal post Doesn't look like emissions,
Looks like gas bottle into the exhaust type cheaty flame kit set up. Flames are wrong colour and last to long.

This is a normal post Yeah, but that POS is all show.
For the money spent on that he could have got a decent car.

This is a normal post Saw an interesting video recently about bringing cars back to life that have been mothballed for many years:
Obviously, kind of American-focussed, but still:

This is a normal post Thanks for the link , will watch with interest.
Might have something on their list we didn't think of.

But generally most things are going to be replaced/renewed if they don't work. It's in the middle of a brake overhaul right now.

This is a normal post Me old man loved a tinker with this sort of thing
He once rebuilt an Austin Metro engine to go in a gutted Morris Traveller van, literally to see if he could; AND stuck an overdrive on the gearbox for a laugh. His vision was for it to outpace something (anything) at the lights, and to see their faces. It never came to fruition, but it's good to see the spirit of endeavour is still in fine fettle. Good work lads!

I think him and my old man sound similar.
My dad and his mate put an Austin maxi 1750 engine and box in a mini traveller when they were younger. Apparently they were foiled as due the the torque steer it was virtually undrivable.

This is a normal post I used to have a Scimitar with overdrive.
Loads of fun when overtaking. When I bought that one though, it's a good thing I thought to check the cylinders before I tried to fire it up. There was a load of rust in them, but strangely I couldn't see where it had all come from. I was fortunate enough to get one that didn't have the "reinforced" plastic timing wheels; I can only imagine what sort of idiot thought that was a good idea.

All in all it was a bit of a frankenstein car: Triumph suspension parts, Ford engine, door handles from a Mini, Jag seats and god knows what else. Still had bloody Lucas electrics though; the devil's own wiring harness.

It's a shame I had to get rid of it in the end, those cars always reminded me of the world's most stylish hearse, and those fold-flat seats made the boot just big enough for two people to bunk down.

Was just a check to see if the serviced fuel pump and carb would work. It did but seemed to show other issues. Still a car as big as rome wasn't built in a day :)

This is a normal post Nearly had a 'moment'.
My passion for vintage, V8s is as deep as it is tragic. You planning on posting more videos of the restoration on YouTube?

Currently suffering from a strange compulsion to Rat-Rod a V6 Rover 75.

This is a normal post Nothing sounds like V8's. always loved the noise.
Hoping to make this one sound well first. Then Loud.

So a rover 75 rat rod?
I can't see that to be honest, but rovers aren't really my thing. Would be happy to be proved wrong though.
I'll make a video of the pictures from what it looked like when it was found (40 years worth of shite on it) to how it is now.

This is a normal post Yeah we did.
We've rigged up a little lawnmower fuel tank that has a primer pump on it so we don't destroy the starter motor trying to get fuel the 500 yards from the tank :)
