Will the media never learn about the coverage of mass shootings?
I happen to believe in the majority of this.
Glasscock but I feel it needs to resurface.

I have noticed that some of the pre-recorded evening chat/humor shows are commenting, others are not.
I guess it is still up to the individual host to decide, not corporate TV policy. Still, it is not "too soon" to be talking about this issue, but maybe half of Merica does not agree with that.

As someone commented elsewhere
It seems like the "too soon" counter gets reset after every such tragedy. So it's always too soon because they occur so frequently.

I think the whole point is the guns, I maybe wrong but there might be something in common with all these mass shootings..#yanklivesdontreallymatter

Absolutely it is all about the guns
I am totally in favor of gun sales/ownership restrictions - background checks, trigger locks, mandatory safety training and licensing, restrict magazine capacity - all of that is fine. The NRA has become the mouthpiece of gun manufacturers, not gun owners, and they will do anything to promote and protect gun sales.
However - totally banning gun ownership? No. Even though I have not shot a gun in about 15 years, even at a target range, I do not think they should be totally banned. I have no quick or obvious reason why, maybe this is not the right place to discuss this issue.
It is not "Merica, Fuck Yeah!" or anything like that. I just have mixed feeling about the whole thing.

Very few people are actually calling for an outright gun ban in the US
Like you say - background checks, testing, licensing and registration PLUS third party liability insurance would satisfy most of the so-called anti-gun lobby. How is owning a gun less onerous than owning a car?
Having said that, holy fuck cars kill a lot of people in the US too - 320 million population and over 30k road related deaths and the same gun deaths every year. Compared to the UK, 65 million population but less than 2k road deaths yearly.

But you cannot fit cars into your pockets and you never hear of mass running over of people do you?

it's a little easier to dodge a car than a bullet.
The whole gun thing is stupid, everyone knows the answer, America just needs to embrace change, not fear it.
That's not going to happen, is it.
