This is a link post Brian Cox tries to explain waves to an idiot.
An old clip but I wanted to post something since apparently it's my birthday :-).

This is a normal post reminds me of this
of course Feynman, being a genius, doesn't get upset and instead shows how pointless the question itself is, by elegantly expressing the fundamental truth of the matter

the first time i watched this i thought he was prevaricating to avoid having to answer the question but his answer was so much richer than that

This is a normal post Comparing the two videos, Feynman makes the D-Ream keyboard player look like an intellectual minnow
I've got a lot of respect for Brian Cox, but I'm going to force my kids to watch Feynman once they're old enough.

This is a normal post Cox can do a amazing job of explaining things, too.
The first half of 'Why does e equal mc squared?' is easily the best popular science I have ever read. Cox breaks down relativity to it's basics in an amazingly concise way over just a hundred or so pages. I think he has an amazing skill for explaining things.

This is a normal post Odd to get someone so technically brilliant with those communication skills
Pisses all over Dawkins who I suppose fills this 'public scientist' role these days.

And anything else you can find too.

If anyone ever brings out the art vs science debate, just show them this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbFM3rn4ldo

This is a normal post happy candles! Some of the comments though...
"The producer is asking BRILLIANT questions - questions which have Cox floundering. This is the state of bullshit mathematical physics today. It's time the maths physicists got back to REAL physics instead of scribbling on the blackboard with chalk. Clearly they've learned nothing from Ptolemy vs Copernicus!"

"Oh Einstein tried to write a paper on this. The effects of gravity travel at the speed of light. It failed publication.
For gravity to be a "wave" it needs to have a velocity. Velocity is distance over time. Forgetting the fact gravity IS time.
The strength of time dilation at low levels is near nothing."

This is a normal post It's the whole transverse vs compressive waves issue
If you try to think of it as analogous to waves on an ocean you'll never understand it.
