This is a normal post Apple would possibly fire retail staff who confront the thiefs,
on the basis that company policy requires that you do not put yourself or your colleagues in danger.

The loss of a few thousand dollars of stolen electronic goods is preferable to the loss of a few hundred thousand dollars in lawsuits from injured employees.
