but why are they captive? I would love a big cat to keep at home but why do we do this?

Many of those cats would have been destroyed if not for Terry
He is also part of the world wide breeding program to keep them going as species, as are zoos these days; there are only 34 Amur Leopards in the wild for example, plus we have to try and keep the gene pool as clean as possible, which is a battle we've lost with the Amur Tiger
