maybe... well its how I would have done it anyway. I think "a year in the making" might be exaggerating a bit

I myself am happy to go with the fact he used magic (and goblins)
Oh and very well done btw!

still we might all be wrong.

But as mentioned below...it just seems dissapointing if it turns out it was all done by digital pokery. I wanted it to be something more..well... clever frankly.

fret ye not, i'll be something jaw dropping tomorrow night
(, Thu 10 Sep 2009, 12:37, Reply)
the fact that it wasn't done in front of an audience makes me suspect the fixed view point is a big factor in the illusion. It could still have been done with clever mirror trickery.
In the end most solutions to magic tricks are a let-down when they are revealed

it's almost a let down finding out how tricks are done because the "magic" disappears, i just can't see derren brown doing something so simplistic
(, Thu 10 Sep 2009, 13:00, Reply)
either by animating the whole screen moving randomly like i did or by using a camera mounted to some kind of device that moves it in a pre-programmed way (and duplicating that movement on the pre-recorded split screen to match)
(, Thu 10 Sep 2009, 12:54, Reply)
as most magic is pretty dull once you know the trick. "oh you cheated" is always the answer.
unless I suppose he doesn't actually use the Friday show to tell the truth - he is all about misdirection after all.

whilst they were watching the show.

Derren's magic is usually more magic than that :(

Either way the man is CREEPY!

I'll forgive him if it has been done this way. Dezzer B is my hero.

If there isn't another angle to it somewhere, he's really gone downhill from his normal "make people think they're being attacked, kidnapped or killed" type malarky.
(, Thu 10 Sep 2009, 12:31, Reply)
Entirely possible, most probably not. I mean, sure this is a huge fake but derren brown just split screening? never!
(, Thu 10 Sep 2009, 12:36, Reply)
My thought was that this was how he did it, however it doesn't seem convoluted enough for Mr Browns work.

Thermal Labels and some kind of directed heat device. Might explain why the balls appeared to move if they were being warmed.
(, Thu 10 Sep 2009, 12:54, Reply)
they can probably scribble some text on some ping pong balls...

Still clever.

the prize break down shows - no one won!

but that would mean the lottery was rigged and I'm fairly sure that's illegal
however it also means he didn't buy a ticket which he would have done if he could really predict the numbers
(, Thu 10 Sep 2009, 19:12, Reply)
if he had done the show and bought a ticket (and subsequently claimed the winnings) I'd say he could. But then no one actually believes he can - it's just wondering which of 10 ways possible he chose to do it by.

I reckon each of the balls have tiny lcd screens controlled by blue-tooth

is much closer to the rear wall than it looks - watch how DB has to shuffle round to get behind it.
All that establishing shot from the rear of the theatre is to make you think there's lots of space (and no locked off camera).
A camera mounted to rotate about its nodal point would allow you to film against a big photograph backdrop and yet have the perspective always correct. Whether the camera shake was added artificially, or simply by rocking the camera on its mount is irrelevant.
With the balls very close to the back wall you can poke the numbers through onto the balls with a stick really easily and not actually need any camera trickery at all.
The fact that one of the balls moves confirms something odd is going on with them, but I'd go for numbers on a stick over camera trickery.

which adds credence to the concept of someone writing it on the ping-pong balls in situ.
