It's about population
The Israelis will never integrate the Palestinians into the state of Israel because the Palestinians have fuck off amounts of children which would overtake their own population in a couple of generations and thus undermine a Jewish nation state. That's it really.

They've been at each other's throats since the nineteenth century
the aftermath of the holocaust and Jewish immigration to Palestine just accelerated the tensions over living space that had been bubbling away since Ottoman times. The Palestinians were simply on the wrong side of the effect of the world's guilt over millions of Europeans turning on their Jewish neighbours during the holocaust. They have consistently played, and been dealt, the wrong hand ever since.

True
The Gaza conflict is difficult because it's war, but giving some land and rights back to the Palestinians in the West Bank is completely within Israel's power, and would be a non-violent way for them to recover support, and so (in my opinion) do the right thing and the clever thing at the same time.
...I'm not optimistic though...
