Cat's are more evolutionarily stable though.
Aside from fur colour and length most cats are the same but dogs vary a lot in size and shape.

I would say that cats display larger variations on size than dogs (e.g. lions etc.).

Well lions are not cats though are they?
Whilst both are of the family Felidae they cannot interbreed so are a different species.

This variety is at the family level not within the same species
