Old clip but just found it.
Seeing as there's only about fifty flying at the moment, a very rare thing.
What a sound.

Not a plane enthusiast but I'd love to fly one of those bad boys.

I categorically deny I would talk in a Etonian way and make machine-gun noises while doing so, too.
"Up tiddly up, down diddly down, whoops up twiddly-dee and then home in time for tea and medals".

I think there's one or maybe two spitfires that have had a passenger seat installed. I would vomit everywhere, but it would be awesome welles to zip around in one!

There was a air show in Wanaka every second year and they had these and mustangs etc. Great stuff to watch.

Spitfire (actually it's the marine-rigged version - Seafire) and Hurricane in formation flyby from the prestigious Henstridge Airfield fly-in a couple of years back. You can't really make it out but the Hurricane is going absolutely flat out while the Spitfire is barely ticking over.

but I wouldn't say either were really going flat out plus the Merlin's a smaller engine (27 litre) than the Griffon (37 litre)
In a dogfight, my money's on the Hurricane coming home after a pasting and up flying again soonest.

It is a privilege that these spitfires are still flying. I am actually saddened by the one hung in the Kelvingrove art gallery, gathering dust.
My grandad told me of the times he saw the sky full of planes. I wasn't paying much attention, but presumably 1940. I can only imagine this noise times a dozen, for a prolonged period. It is truly frightening. But only really after seeing this. I am happy to say, when I got told that story whilst walking in the Cotswalds, I really couldn't picture it, except maybe like being overwhelmed by bluebottles.
