I can't think of a single genuinely remarkable thing he's done
All I think of is a list of 'alright' things that he's been involved in at best. I really don't get how he has amassed such a following amonst nerds.
I hold J.J. Abrams in much and the same regard.

Serenity
I and many others regard it as one of the finest Sci Fi movies ever made. Oh and Buffy, in-particular Hush and Once More With Feeling. Oh and Dr Horrible....

Serenity was enjoyable
but one of the finest Sci Fi movies ever made? Are you mad? I wouldn't even dream of placing it next to films like Bladerunner and 2001. It's alright, really.. that's all it is. It's all been done before. It's not genius.
This is my problem. I really cannot see what he does that makes him worthy of such high regard. It all fits comfortably within the sci fi/fantasy canon, but it's not remarkable at all.

yeah the film was kind of poo.
buffy is shit and what's his name, angel, he's shit too. firefly had sweet dialogue but it was bollocks in other ways. cabin in the woods is fucking awesome. i really enjoyed it. i need to see if i can tolerate the bullshit bits of doll house but i'm doubting it. i only watched firefly cos my brother was trading me for watching episodes of twin peaks which i thought he ought to like. :D

Id never heard of serentiy before 1 week ago, I finally got arouond to watching it last night. Its a good film, perfectly watchable, but instantly forgettable. some good "quippy" dialog but its not going on my list of Films To Watch Before You Die.

I was a huge fan of Firefly
Still rate it as one of the best Sci-Fi series made. Serenity though was an extended TV episode that couldn't decide if it was going to cater to just the existing fans, or to open it all up to a new audience. As a result the dialogue (the greatest strength of the series) just descends into trite exposition at times. Then there's the fast-cutting style in the action shots that just end up baffling you as things aren't on screen long enough to recognise them or connect them to the previous shot.
One of the finest Sci Fi movies ever made? Only if you're compiling a long list...

firefly was hands down, fantastic. Serenity, was good. great in parts, as a fan i loved it. and also was upset at parts. as a stand alone film not sure where it would be on my list of all time great scifi. but i still enjoy it.

Firefly is a cult classic.
It's a great TV series, but I expect it wouldn't have had the cult following if it hadn't been cancelled so early on. This way people can learn every line of the 14 episodes, and look back longingly at better times or something. Also The Avengers: Assemble was fun.
With regards to Abrams, I really like Fringe. It's silly, but it's good drama, good sci-fi and funny in an unusual way.
