he takes his satchel and walks away. I presume that is because he knows the pecking order, and despite it having been his right of way, he was about to get fucked by the other party. Tragedy.

I presumed it was because he was drunk, uninsured and it wasn't his car anyway!

Or, more likely.
it's a scrap car, with no insurance, and it's better to walk away sharpish, than to 'discuss' the issue with the coppers.
Happens quite a lot in this country too, although the price of scrap metal's slowed it down a lot. When you could buy a car for £50, it was easier just to abandon it if you hit someone.
