do you have to defeat a certain monster?

They will unlock as the game progresses but I can't remember if it is due to
defeating specific opponents, upgrading your player to a certain level or just progressing through a percentage of the game.

Certain things unlock them...
Filling the combo bar, getting all of NEKOGAMES, unlocking all the missions - that sort of thing.
