And the film makes that abundantly clear. Still horrible though. And I felt very sorry for his girlfriend.

I felt a really weird connection to him. You know he's a fucking idiot, but you sort of admire his dedication and reluctancy to fit into normal life.
That's probably credit to Herzog as a filmmaker more than anything. It's well made reminder of how nature is ultimately a cold psychopath.
