That completely disagrees with my understanding of copyright law.
Copyright is an automatic right, no registration is required. See the IPO www.ipo.gov.uk/types/design/d-applying/d-before/d-needreg.htm.
Copyright is only one of multiple forms of protection for Intellectual Property.

That's where my knowledge of copyright falls down.
I'd assume that there's now no copyright on the artwork, but there would be on your photograph. So people couldn't use your photo, but could use their own photos of the artwork.
