Can you actually , legally own one of these in the US?

This is a normal post I'm sure you can, but you'd need a serious license for it. Likely only military and/or defense contractors
You could not use it in the US except for Defense approved ranges. Although I did see where the Department of Homeland Security ordered 1.4 billion rounds of ammo recently, so maybe they intend to use it on the average citizen.
