This is a link post A bit too close for comfort

My friends think I'm mad for being a psychonaut. I surround myself with awesome music, friends and pillows.

I have a mate called Crazy Phil who hangs out with guys like these. Wingsuit nutjobbage.

This is a normal post It's the begining of someting new.
In the first 10 years of powered flight there where more than 200 different companies iterating 1000's of design - in France alone.

Lets say there was a rapid natural selection that quickly led to "modern" aircraft.
We are only doing gradual improvements on those first years.

In 10 or so years, with fully evolved flight suits, these people will look back at the pioneers and classify them as mad.

Yes I think you are right, like modern day airplane pilots compared to the first jet test pilots.

This is a normal post What utter bollocks
All flying is perfectly safe unless you get too close to the edges. The ground is most reliable edge there is. No amount of "modernisation" will change that.

You should send him an angry letter.

This is a normal post Can't find the one above - I'd have to through tens of long winded Rutan presentations...
But it stuck to my brain for the sheer mental aspect of so much done in so little time.
A bit like software nowadays - without the dying in a flaming wreck aspect.

But this one is close enough:
Transcrip of TED talk, line 2.44.

This is a normal post What?
Powered flight clearly leads directly to both passenger and cargo transport rapidly over great distances and possibly even more importantly a strategic advantage on the battlefield. That's why there was so much effort expended towards it. What's the goal for wingsuits?

down mountains?

But they said the same about heavier than air at the beginning.
Just a rich man's fad...
Steam trains and coal burning passenger liners much better...

I think the most obvious initial application military: high/low with stand-off insertion.
Or "Fun" for Jimmie Saville.

This is a normal post Wow
Terrifying, mesmerising, sickening! I could not look away, yet felt so queasy just watching how closely they skimmed the trees.
Amazing, but really not for me.

Good to hear the wind and all.
