This is a link post Another reason to keep US gun laws intact.
They allow you to defend yourself against loud music.

This is a normal post Why??
does this article even bring race into it??

It should read "Batshit mentalist shoots student!"
whats the point of it?
The race card gets played far too much for my liking! we are all humans (well most of us.. well some of us... )
(, Thu 29 Nov 2012, 10:38, , Reply)
This is a normal post The question of race is brought up because of Trayvon Martin
It appears that US gun laws are allowing old white men to shoot clearly innocent black teenagers.
Yes we're all the same and the races do not scientifically exist, but that does not prevent racist attitudes.

This is a normal post I'm tempted to agree;
but there's a whole load of literature on threat perception. People are far more likely to perceive a black person as a threat, which suggests that there's a big problem with institutional and subconscious racism that puts black people more at risk.

Worryingly, it's not just whites that fall prey to this misperception - there's a famous line from Jesse Jackson from Newsweek (13.xii.1993): "[T]here is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery, then look and see somebody white and feel relieved."

Which is a bit scary, really

This is a normal post As a fairly pale white man, I'm scared by both white and black men, can't stand either
but only if they are tall and muscly. Short and muscly asian men are like dwarves.
Well, that's my racist message for today.

I don't know why that's scary - he lives in the US where he is far, far more likely to be the victim of a black street robber than a white one. If If there's heavy traffic then I'm more careful crossing the street than when there's light traffic. Both scenarios could see me get run over, but one is far more likely to.

This is a normal post None of us know how threatened that guy felt with perhaps a car load of mouthy, aggressive blokes
giving him 'attitude.' It goes both ways
(, Thu 29 Nov 2012, 11:15, , Reply)
This is a normal post This is true.
But if he felt so threatened that killing them seemed like a reasonable response, it's hard to avoid the conclusions (a) that the error might have been his, and (b) that he probably isn't the kind of person you'd want to be armed. Or alone in public at all.

This is a normal post It saddens me ultimately he had a gun on his person in the first place
incidents like this will always be inevitable if this is the case
(, Thu 29 Nov 2012, 11:24, , Reply)
This is a normal post Well, yes.
But, still, there's no reason to believe that anyone was being mouthy or aggressive except the guy with the gun; and even if the people shot had been mouthy and aggressive, it's really not at all obvious that summary shooting is the best way to deal with the situation.

This is a normal post I was just answering Tab's question
Perhaps they were stationary listening to loud music causing disruption to everyone around them, so he pulled up next to them and asked them to turn it down. Perhaps they gave him a load of aggressive, unreasonable bollocks back to him, so he wasted the guy. Just speculation, I wasn't there.

This is a normal post You Calling My Pint A Puff?
I'm in fear of my life. I'll stand my ground and kill you.

It's a crazy law. It gives people who carry guns the right to inflame a situation and then, when things get heated, pull a gun and execute someone.

What's next? A mentally-ill homeless dude spits on the pavement and someone calls him on it. Homeless guy get's defensive, angry, and the you pull a gun and kill him? Is that what you want - 'cos that's what'll happen...

Oh dear. Came all over Enfield again...

Cheers

Without the gun on him and a law that basically says "He was coming right for me", would this situation even have occurred?
