This is a link post Conflict - Conflict
Here's one for tabhunter. They dont make music like that anymore. Which is a shame imo. Punk wasnt about music it was about attitude.

This is a normal post "Punk wasn't about music it was about attitude" - not something I would dispute. And not something that contradicts my assertion that the music WAS dreadful.
...and yeah, they DO make still make music like that- just find your nearest sixth form.
As an aside- My FAVOURITE band ever- Cardiacs- came out of the punk movement. They would not exist without punk. I'm not questioning the importance of it, just pointing out that the music is shit, dated and of its time. At best an historical document

This is a normal post Don't make me ninjaedit.
Yes, okay. But I meant that it's of its time & no more worth than that- it's not (example at random) Thomas Tallis- something as relevant and wonderful to listen to as it was when written 4+ centuries ago.
Punk as a movement was important. The music; a wonderful irrelevance, that just happens to be fucking awful.

This is a normal post I know- this isn't an argument, is it? It's just semantics.
And yes, the pistols were fun....
...can we just all agree that the MUSIC was the least important aspect of the punk movement?
(, Sun 3 Jun 2012, 15:01, Reply)
This is a normal post No.
Punk was about more than the music but it wouldn't have existed as it did without the music.
(, Sun 3 Jun 2012, 15:03, Reply)
This is a normal post That doesn't invalidate my assertion that the music is objectively shit. The music was a conduit, a means to an end.
Exactly like all of the marketed, pop nonsense in the charts now.
As I say- a massive irrelevance.
I think we've reached an impasse: I'm not going to not think that you're wrong & you're not going to stop thinking that I'm a reactionary, ill-tempered, old curmudgeon.
And that's something we can both agree on.

This is a normal post ....
Why do i still like the music then? I liked it back then and i still like it now. I dont like modern punk i think it's shit. I dont like yanky punk, i think it's shit. I think what your really saying is 'i dont like it so it must be shit'. This has been mentioned already though so i wont go on. I play guitar, i play piano, i play harmonica, i play the banjo (hairy one too), i play the ukulele, i like classical music too. But i still like 70's UK punk an to me the music is 'not shit'.

This is a normal post ach the kids dont know how to write songs like this these days....
Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias - Kill
www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1be2tfdATg

Why? because conforming is the way to be these days. It's hip to be square. We didnt need no mobile phones nor mp3's. We didnt need computers . We had real lifegoing on all around us and that made us wake up and smell the coffee. Nowadays everyone seems happy if theyve got a internet connection and a trendy phone.

This is a normal post ....& I'll merely say: I wholeheartedly agree with your last statement.
I started in a band when a four-track was a luxury- we all swapped instruments, played badly, it was more important to get the feel of a song down than a polished performance: A punk attitude.

means different things to different people. I have heard Blondie called Punk, but would disagree. I think the Ramones were the best punk band, but some would say they weren't punk at all.
It is interesting that the biggest UK 'face' of punk is now doing butter commercials though.

Edit: Had to listen to this now i mentioned them

learned of those guys just last year, and can't stop listening now. I never knew anything of that post punk era, but they were/are so insanely ahead of their time its unreal. really amazing band.

apparently my missus met Tim Smith once, and managed to tell him he was an inspiration.

the only crap thing is they are unable to play live now, so I might never get to see them myself.

This is a normal post You are my new favourite b3tard.
My husband & I saw North Sea Radio Orchestra a few years ago (sit down recital hall do) & Tim Smith came & sat with us for the whole thing. LOVELY bloke. So down to earth, in spite of all those notes in his head.
Iwas lucky enough to see 'em play 14 times, too!
I'm off out right now, but gaz me if you want some rarities....

sounds like a dude by all accounts, good sense of humour throughout too judging by what I've read about the bandsman's uniforms/ stage show they had going on.
