This is a normal post How very silly
Although I absolutely love my Audeze LCD 2's
Like liquid gold lovingly spaffed into each ear hole.

This is a normal post I don't have time for namby pamby headphone amps and specialist audio equipment.
I couldn't justify the cost as I don't have enough free time to sit down and truly 'listen' to music these days. But I do own a set of Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Wireless headphones for commuting with and they're lully :)

This is a normal post You probably don't want to hear about my multibit DAC and Tube amp with vintage tubes then?
Which is shame because it's some good Schiit.

Of course these were purchased before I started breeding...

This is a normal post Hello there. I'm objectivist, nonetheless I'm glad you enjoy your Schiit.

This is a normal post As in it's relatively easy to find equipment which is good enough for you ears, or in fact few magnitudes too good (as in accurate).
Conversely, it's relatively hard to convince people so who are heavily invested either emotionally or financially in gear acquisition.

This is a normal post YES!
There is no point in having ludicrously expensive equipment (pride, feeling clever/special, OCD apart) with typical hearing in an ordinary room. I'll not be surprised if the last thing an 'audiophile' tests are their ears.

Of course the music media/encoding is another argument...

This is a normal post Well, the room is out of question with headphones. The medium is really non issue if recording (plain CD(1)) is decent or digital with decent DAC.
I still like tube amplifiers, as they are pretty cool, even if they do not make sense from hi-fidelity point
of view (they used to make a lot of sense with guitars though, now I'm not so sure with modern modelling).

That doesn't mean I don't like Audeze or Stax or something. That just means I think that Sennheiser HD650/600, DT880
etc (the yesterdays flagships) are already at the point of drastically reduced returns in regard to money investment.

The people who search for holy grail usually end up quite frustrated, rationalizing yet another strange exotic purchase,
while failing to appreciate that e.g. decent modern DACs are (should be) magnitudes more accurate than what you can
distinguish (blindly by ear, that is they are transparent). Of course the former are usually people who purposely buy
audio gear which is supposed to colour sound in some way or offset some perceived flaw, thus feeding their neverending
frustration.

This is a normal post Another factor is perception.
Or it might be the biggest factor. We get used to the sound we are used to hearing, filter and interpret it.
If you sincerely believe the sellers pitch it is more likely to sound better.
My comment about media was comparing say, 8 track, CD, vinyl, .mp3 and sampling rates for any digital format.
Cassettes were only for copying and emergencies.

TL;DR - Emperors new clothes.

This is a normal post Oh, of course. The perception thing is huge.

This is a normal post I'd LOVE to hear about it
I've just bought a paid of B&W P9s and I'm listening to them through a Marantz HD-DAC1 and the sound is like unicorns spunking rainbow gakk in your ears.

Don't even get me started on my Clearaudio turntable which is so good I'm tempted to spread my own seed all over it

This is a normal post Oh shiney new headphones?
There's no review yet on Head-Fi, you could be the first if you do a write up.

The LCD's really do benifit with the oomph a good amp can feed it even though they can technically be run without one. An amp really brings the musicallity of the bass detail without increasing the volume.

If you ever go tube, look into NOS (New old stock) ones from the 50's and 60's.
Modern tubes are created by different methods and don't sound nearly as lush.

This is a normal post Hifi News have reviewed them
I'm not very good at writing reviews. All I will say is they look lovely (especially the cross hatching on the leather) and the soundstage is biggggggggg. I was listening to Selling England By The Pound by Genesis this afternoon and the last 5 minutes of Firth of Fifth really showed off the detail and dynamic range. Some serious low frequency grunt, smooth mids and stunning highs. £699 from Amazon and worth every penny so far.

I've got a tube headphone amp that I built last year - it's an Elekit TU8200 with Electro Harmonix 6L6 GCs. I've not plugged the P9s into it yet but will be doing soon. I've just finished building an Audion Edison 60 amp with EL34s. It's got a bad ground hum at the moment so it needs a rebuild!

The Marantz HD-DAC1 is nothing short of brilliant by the way. Everyone who has decent cans should buy one.

This is a normal post you were what???
'I was listening to Selling England By The Pound by Genesis'
Some years back I had a drunk at the itunes control session and bought this plus a lot of other ill-advised prog rock. It really is total wank.

This is a normal post A lifetime ago
I worked in the back of an elite Hi Fi store. I was there to replace worn belts, balance tonearms and repair blown amps.
There were some neat things that I got to check out.
Electrostatic headphones sounded quite good but the high DC voltage right near my ears bothered me. Would have been disastrous in light rain. Thankfully they were not portable.
Owners of the store and most of the customers were batshit crazy.
