This is a link post Fry tries to cover his arse.

I'm using the Fry/Clarkson test for both of these idiots from now on.
i) Take quote.
ii) Imagine the other said it.
iii) Does this make the quote change it's appeal?
iv) If so, it's rubbish.
v) If not it's probably still rubbish.

This is a normal post Tries to cover his arse, from what?
Whether clarkson or fry said it is irrelevant and sounds the same, if you want to stir it you should say what if Savile or Stewart Hall had said it.

This is a normal post Im sure Savile was an advocate of it and Hall for that matter too.

This is a normal post yes, that's the point, making it a far more outrageous thing to be said
even though it is not specifically talking about the role of the offending (and possibly unknowing) adult

This is a normal post We all know in the real world, it does happen ....
I broke my duck at 13, so remembering that, does that make me a paedophile too?
Even so, we know the views of people like Stinson Hunter Et Al, who lump baby shaggers in with slightly misguided men who seek out a girl 6 months away from her legal age of consent.
A man of Frys towering intellectual stature would be well aware of the furore a comment like this would cause. Looking for column inches springs to mind.

This is a normal post Author says something controversial in order to sell his book shocker.
I think the fact that Bill Wyman hasn't been investigated is proof that yewtree are looking for people that actually consider themselves victims.

This is a normal post ^this^
really doesn't make it right though (the Wyman thing), I still can't understand how he got away with it.
Other than possibly massive bribes that removed any ounce of care for their child, what stopped her parents going to the police?

This is a normal post Ha. I like that test :)
What he said, initially, sounds sensible. And then your brain kicks in- having sex with kids is *not* okay, however you may wish to justify it.

This is a normal post that's the thing, he's saying a child would boast about being close to their "hero"
he's not talking about the obvious fact that the "hero" would be abusing a position of power if they were aware of the age.

This is a normal post Um..
I don't think he was justifying it in any way.

This is a normal post "Asked whether he was concerned about being accused of such crimes himself, as a public figure in entertainment circles for the past few decades, Fry...'
what a cheeky fucking arsehole that journalist is to even ask that question. "Are you worried about being accused?" is tantamount to saying "Have you fucked kids?"

This is a normal post It's too nuanced an argument for Clarkson.
It would fail a Dawkins/Fry test, though.
(, Thu 23 Oct 2014, 11:15, , Reply)
This is a normal post If you read what he actually says, and understand his arguments, then what he says makes perfect sense. They've just been lumped together in a newspaper article to generate a controversial argument.
1. There's a huge moral difference between people being raped and him abusing himself with drugs.
2. The experience of Savile has left the BBC paranoid.
3. Some people in their 50s had sex with rock stars when 14 and do not consider themselves victims (whether they are or not is a different matter)
4. People should not be called 'victims' before the person involved has been charged or the case brought to court.
5. People should be convicted by evidence, not by putting them in the media and waiting for allegations of half-remembered groping to pour in.
6. Raping a child is worse than groping a child which is worse than groping an adult.
7. People are being tarred with the Jimmy Savile brush because they once patted someone's bottom.
