I feel a bit sad when I see sketches/online opinions on 'goths' that go like this
Ive known gothy types on n off all me life n always found them to be gentle sane acedemic types, not at all the stereotype of dumb rebels without a clue always acting glum or threatening suicide 'cos they hate everyone.
See also metal heads.
Can't help but think those who find them so do so by creating it, you know, based upon whenever they bark 'Cheer up cunts!' at them they get told to fuck off.
Tho in defence of the stereotype, goth teenagers are usually angsty teenagers.
*edit* plus if it were true, twice a year, Whitby would be a bloodbath of slashed wrists!

I've seen too many websites with goth girls to believe it is a goth tenet not to show the body.

I was a goth but I got better :)
I grew up, cheered up and expanded my musical horizons BUT I kept the clothing colour scheme. Everything in my wardrobe is still black. It makes sense though. Not only is it a slimming colour choice, everything goes with everything else so I don't need to worry about clashes, thereby freeing up my time to pursue other activities, like Frenchcore, Drum & Bass, Hard Style and the production thereof.

I agree with Wil
Nearly all the goth types I know are cheerful, intelligent, educated folk who just enjoy a certain type of fashion and music. I can't find the link now, but there was some research done on teenage groups that showed in general goths were well balanced, well educated, high achievers. Today of course there are many sub-groups even within the goth sub-culture, and many people who might 'look' goth are would actually align themselves more with the metalheads of old - it's just that they like the Marilyn Manson style fashions.
