Remeber seeing these years ago in an CG graphics forum and that was the conclusion too.
You wouldn't get the god rays at that scale unless you had some very fine particles, smaller than dust to scatter them. Also there's a lot of colour burn going on.
Could have started as a normal photograph with that stuff that gives a sense of scale added in or a pure 3D model. I thought the latter because the side cut on the F-Holes looks very rough.
